Essential Nursing Products to Make Feeding Your Baby Easier
A breast pump and supplies
Whether you plan to nurse directly or exclusively pump a breast pump is a must have. When baby is born you never know what challenges will arise when it comes to latching and feeding. My go-to favorite traditional electric pump is the Spectra 2. It’s basic but it gets the job done. I also love the hands-free Motif Aura Glow. Perfect for on-the-go, and around the house, or at work. No need to excuse yourself to pump and no tubing needed! Pop these in and go about your day. The motor stays charged for up to two days and the pump parts are minimal and super easy to clean! However, you’re experiencing a clogged duct I always go back to the Spectra. The suction just can’t be beat!
I’ve always had the best luck establishing my milk supply with hand expression and hand-held breast pump. My body just does not respond to breast pumps right away. I love the Medela version and the Haakaa.
Pumping extras like pump sprays might seem unnecessary but they really do make the experience more comfortable. Don’t forget wipes and sanitizing bags to keep your pump clean and operating properly.
Nursing Pads
Leaks happen. The best way to make sure no one knows you’ve sprung a leak and stay dry is the use nursing pads. I prefer the disposable pads without the sticky backing because they tend not to wrinkle so much. You can also use reusable cotton pads.
Nipple Care
The best way to ensure success in breastfeeding is to take care of those nips! If you’re trying to stick with it for the long haul you need the best comfort items for your physical and mental well-being. Nipple creams are super helpful for new mothers experiencing soreness or cracking. These creams are designed to soothe and heal the skin while providing hydration. Choosing a nipple cream that is free from harmful chemicals and safe for both mother and baby is crucial, especially since direct contact may occur during feeding. Even if you aren’t feeding at the breast nipple creams can help make pumping more comfortable. In severe cases when you need quick soothing relief, Medela gel pads are a lifesaver! Just make sure to wipe off before feeding, but you’ll feel instant relief and I’ve always experienced healed cracks within a day of use!
Nursing Pillow
I’ll be honest, I never actually used a boppy for nursing it was pretty bulky to fumble around with. I actually stick it upright behind me while I nurse so I don’t end up totally stiff. I just a normal pillow to raise baby up and guide into a proper latch position and reduce strain on my arms and shoulders.
Nursing Cover
One of the biggest challenges I faced as a nursing mom is the isolation that came with feeding my baby. Now that I’m on my third baby I’m much less bashful about nursing in public or in front of family. If I’m in front of only women I say “it’s coming out” and it people want to turn away they can! But, not everyone is so bold and when you’re in mixed company a nursing cover is handy.
Nursing Bra and Tops
Comfort and practicality are the most important things when it comes to a nursing bra. You’ll find what is right for you through trial and error. My favorite nursing bras aren’t the fancy ones you see on TikTok, but they’re comfortable, supportive and easy to use.
Home Remedies
Amazon has it all, but sometimes a good DIY is all you need. Here are some hacks I’ve learned along the way:
For blisters, cracks, or clogged ducts use a hot compress. I like just to hold a washcloth on myself in the shower. Making a warm Epsom salt soak in your Haakaa is also a great way to promote healing.
To release milk from a clogged duct use an electric toothbrush to gently massage the area. Do this right after your shower compress when things are more pliable. After compressing and massaging pump or nurse to clear the duct.
For engorgement and discomfort, the cabbage trick really works! Before you apply, put the cabbage leaf between two pieces of paper towel and roll with a rolling pin to break up the veins of the leaf so the liquid holding the anti inflammatory goodness can actually get to your skin.
Making breastfeeding comfortable and practical will increase your chances of long-term success. These tips and items helped me when I struggled and wanted to call it quits. I hope they can make your experience more enjoyable too!
